tutorial {tuesday}

I have ALWAYS wanted a canopy bed. With huge curtains and a big fluffy bedspread. Every girl wants to be a princess right? Right? Ok, maybe I'm just lame. But then I married this:

And "this" would have none of that. Absolute refusal to have a canopy bed. So I figured there had to be a way to do a quick, easy canopy without it costing an arm and a leg and being princessy.
So I started with some wooden dowels from Hobby Lobby ($.29 a piece) and some sheer fabric panels from IKEA (two for $5.00) .
I inserted the dowel through the casing. Not. too. difficult.
Then I thumb tacked them to the ceiling. Yep, thumb tacked. Pretty easy, and I'm pretty sure I like it. And hubs hasn't seen it yet, because I figured it's always better to ask forgiveness than permission. Just sayin.

Have a great Tuesday and let me know what you think!

Linking up to THESE parties this week.

***UPDATE***
I wasn't fully loving the canopy until I went to IKEA and added two side panals as well, so it's basically a big rectangle at the head of the bed with curtains coming down. LURVE.

Gathering is also a great look. Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I love it!!!! I had a canopy bed growing up. My bedrrom right now is so small I can;t have a real one. What a fun (cheap) and easy option! Beautiful!

P.S. 95% of what I do happen while the hubs is away....

  2. My husband included in our "prenuptial" a clause that we could never have pink in our bedroom. (I use quotations because it was merely an unofficial conversation post-premarital counseling.) So I know about picky husbands who want to have a say in decorating. :)

It looks great, though! Classy but not too girly for a man to live there.

I love your toile panels. I have that exact same fabric in the living room in our old house before I changed the color scheme.

  4. I'm here visiting from "Not Just A Housewife" I LOVE your "canopy" and I've always wanted one. I've found if I plant an idea in my future hubby's mind and make him think it was his idea that works to my advantage because not only do I get what i wanted done but he does it for me :)
Thanks for sharing and your blog is really cute

  8. I had to laugh, because I have totally done the thumbtacks in the ceiling before! Hey, it works, right? I love how your canopy turned out. It's very princess-y and yet not over the top feminine. Great job!

  12. I've been wanting to make my daughter a reading nook with a bean bag and canopy area in a corner of her room. I was considering using sheets and then a friend suggested tulle, but I think you've got the perfect idea with window sheers. I had planned to use a hula hoop...hmmm, now I have to consider how to get the sheers on it or what I could use instead...
THANKS for the great inspiration and your bed looks fantastic!

  14. @Kelli - What about hot gluing velcro to the hula hoop and sewing or gluing onto the window sheers, then tying ribbon between each panel to hang?

  16. THANK YOU from the bottom of my Canadian heart. This project is exactly what I have been searching for the bedroom that the cat and dog allow me to sleep in!!
Can you please tell me how far from the wall you "bolted" the dowels on the ceiling with the thumb tacks? What is the measurement of the dowels?
    Thanks so much again.

  23. What an awesome idea!

I will be working on our bedroom in a few months or so. I want to make it (hmmmm...what's the word?) sensual? I want it romantic/sexy but not feminine. I'm thinking of going with a cranberry and black color theme with a little gold highlights.

This canopy would be perfect...I would probably make a black one lol!

  25. That is very clever! What a smart lady you are. Would you mind if I shared your project (with a link back of course) on my blog?

  26. I know I just emailed you asking where to find this-sorry-i didn't look far enough-I an so do this when I redecorate my room I can't wait- I had a canopy as a child and loved it. It will add to the room sooo much. I have a new picture of the Salt Lake Temple that I can see highlighted above my headboard-underneath this canopy. I will try to post a picture when it's done. I may do it in a light taupe color though to match the colors that I'm using in my room.

  30. Thank you Julie!
The chest was actually built for me by my dad when I was 16. He's amazing! :)
